TCR-IT-006: BYOD Policy

Governs use of personal electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) by students, faculty, and staff to access TCR’s network and resources.

Personal devices are useful for learning and teaching, but connecting unmanaged hardware to TCR’s network creates risk to network integrity and data if left unregulated. This policy sets baseline security expectations so personal devices can be used without becoming a weak point.

  • Preferred behavior is connecting personal devices to the public network (DCSD).
  • TCR has separate Wi-Fi networks for public and more secure access; the secured network has stricter guidelines and limited access.

Security requirements (secure network only)

Section titled “Security requirements (secure network only)”
  • Up-to-date antivirus software, where applicable.
  • Password protection, minimum 8 characters including numbers and symbols.
  • Personal devices may access college email, LMS, and other educational resources.
  • Not to be used during exams/assessments unless explicitly authorized by the instructor.
  • Downloading or storing sensitive college data on personal devices is strictly prohibited.
  • TCR is not responsible for loss, theft, or damage to personal devices.
  • Users are responsible for maintenance and repair of their own devices.
  • TCR is not liable for data loss or privacy breach resulting from personal device use.

The Office of Information Technology monitors network access for compliance. Violations may result in revocation of network access privileges and disciplinary action.

All users connecting to the secure TCR network must acknowledge and agree to this policy; everyone else is expected to be familiar with and supportive of it.
