Canvas

Canvas is TCR’s learning management system (LMS). Students access it for coursework, assignment submission, and class communication; the AUP requires basic proficiency in Canvas as part of what’s expected of students.

Cloud-hosted LMS (Instructure). Integrates natively with Populi.

Not yet documented: specific plan/tier or any TCR-side customization.

Canvas replaced Moodle, chosen as the industry-standard LMS at the time — and it proved to be the right call: a genuinely good decision given what TCR needed then.

That said, it’s shown real downsides over time: it’s heavy, expensive, customer service has been lacking, and it provides more features than TCR actually needs. Because of that, Populi is being considered as a replacement for Canvas, targeted for 2027/2028 — consolidating SIS and LMS under one vendor rather than running Canvas alongside Populi.

Not yet documented: exact Canvas adoption date.

Tentative target: 2027/2028. If this happens, it would eliminate the current Canvas↔Populi native integration entirely in favor of a single system, and would need to account for whatever Canvas-side content/history needs to migrate. Nothing is committed yet — treat this as a direction being evaluated, not a decision.

  • Populi: native integration — vendor-provided, not custom-built. Enrollment/roster sync details between the two systems are not yet documented in depth.
  • Google Workspace: students access Canvas alongside Google services using TCR credentials (per the Acceptable Use Policy signature summary).

Not yet documented: URL/hostname, who has admin access, login method (Canvas-native vs. SSO).

Course enrollment presumably depends on Populi via the native integration; exact direction and mechanics not yet documented.

Not yet documented — likely vendor-managed given Canvas is cloud-hosted, but not yet confirmed.

Referenced in the Acceptable Use Policy and Device AUP as one of the core platforms students are expected to use TCR credentials for.
